A Word from Rick: April 29, 2022

notes on the Bible
Rick Davis

Some weeds have flowers, some flowers have thorns. Some soil is good for many types of plants, but not for all. Some plants are good for people to eat providing nutrients to live on, others have medical uses. There are some that are downright poisonous to people, pets, livestock… seemingly everything.

When it comes to God’s work in Christ, the soil is always good, rich, and filled with a feast of nutritious food for any kind of plant. The Kingdom of Heaven is like rich soil that provides everything needed for the most prosperous garden. Out of this soil, the heart, soul, and life of all people grow strong and healthy. In this story, what grows will either contribute to the garden, the Kingdom of Heaven, or take what is offered and give little or nothing to the ongoing work of God.

In one of Jesus’ parables out of Matthew, we read of such a garden or field that grows many different types of plants.

Matthew 13:24-30

He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away.” When asked by the worker if the weeds should be pulled the Master said, “No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them.” The Master went on to say that in the harvest the weeds would be disposed with, and the wheat collected.

Apparently, people can cause serious harm when we decide who is allowed to grow in God’s garden. Maybe we need to put our energy into being what God has planted within us. To do this, it is beneficial to gather in the presence of the Lord, share the goodness of God’s love, and grow together.

I hope that you will join us Sunday for worship. We will gather in the sanctuary at 8:45 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. or you can join us at 11:00 a.m. on Facebook Live on our Facebook page.

May the Grace and Peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!
