Ash Wednesday

I didn’t grow up observing Lent. I think I missed out. As an adult, I’ve learned to cherish this season. I used to think it was just about giving something up or, worse, giving something up that I really didn’t WANT to give up. But I’ve learned that Lent is less about subtraction and more about addition and multiplication. The addition comes from adding something to my life: more time with God in prayer, reading the Bible, and listening to the Holy Spirit. The multiplication occurs in every area of my life that benefits as a result!

Lent is about coming to terms with my own limitations. You see, there is an Almighty God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills and who sets the very boundaries of the ocean depths, and I am not Him.

Lent is about coming to terms with my own sinful nature, my own propensity toward being selfish and self-centered. You see, I need a savior, and I am not Him.

As a church, we mark the beginning of this season of reflection and searching by marking ourselves with the sign of the One who died in our place, the One who offers us the promise of eternal life. I want to invite you to church on Ash Wednesday, February 18th, at 6:00 PM, so that we can begin this journey together.

And if you’re looking for a way to add something to your daily spiritual life this Lent, feel free to pick up a free Lenten Devotional at church beginning this Sunday. We’ll have some lying around for you to take–maybe even take one to give to a friend.

So while you might be trying to figure out what to give up this Lent, let me ask you something more important: What will you ADD to your life this Lent? What will you add that will make more room for Christ in your life?
